Conference Programme:

Using the coursebook (Penny Ur)

A textbook is, for most teachers, an essential basis for their English courses. Some writers
have suggested that it has a negative influence on teaching: that teachers become slaves of the
coursebook, and just follow it blindly and mechanically. This, in my experience is not so:
most teachers can, and do, use materials in different ways to make them more appropriate for
their students. In this workshop I will look at some simple techniques of adaptation of coursebook texts and exercises to make them more learning-rich, interesting, or available to different levels of students in the class.

Introducing new grammar in different ways (Olga Connolly)

To teach new grammar, we need a good context where grammar comes from. Only this way students can relate it to real communication and real use. In this session we will explore different approaches to introducing grammar from context. Some of them are more suitable for lower level students, while others for more advanced ones.

Motivation in learning: a magic pill or work in progress?
(Polina Kordik)

Long-term, sustained motivation that lasts not just days or weeks, but months and years. Isn’t it what we dream of for ourselves and our learners? Is it possible to achieve? The research on motivation gives us a definite yes. In my talk, I will guide you through the newest theory of motivation Directed Motivational Currents (DMC), so that by the end of my session you can design your own steps to long-term motivation for your learners and yourself.

Tips and Hints for more Natural Sounding Pronunciation (Top Primary and Secondary) (Susan Hillyard)

Despite Native Speakerism being frowned upon and British Pronunciation being virtually impossible to define, many teachers all around the world, feel a need to build their confidence in this area of their teaching repertoire. This interactive webinar is based on research identifying the most elusive components to initially raise awareness of teachers’ needs to attune their listening.  Through discovering what they need to notice in terms of the finer details of sounds, stress, contractions, intonation and modulation combined with pauses they can practice and create a more natural flow in their own speaking skills in order to feel more confident. They will leave with a pack of resources to follow up with prcatice.

Belonging and personalization in the AI era (Sarah Hillyard )

This session explores how to create a classroom where students feel they truly belong by personalizing teaching and learning. We’ll discuss practical strategies to foster a positive, student-centered environment and examine the role AI can play in supporting this personalization. With a focus on human connection, this session offers actionable ideas to ensure every learner feels valued and engaged, with or without AI.
