Conference Programme:

How to turn coursebook into games (Elena Peresada)

Modern coursebooks offer a variety of exercises for practicing vocabulary, grammar and speaking. However, doing the same tasks over and over again may become boring after a while. Not to worry, though! In my workshop I’ll demonstrate interactive activities and games which can be used instead of textbook exercises.

If you have a look at an average unit in the coursebook, you’ll find that all exercises are more or less the same: match words with the pictures, listen and repeat, fill in the gaps, make true sentences about yourself, etc.
I have selected a number of interactive activities and games for each type of textbook exercise. You just disguise the teaching objective with a game and follow your curriculum.

Classsic Activities in a new way (Ekaterina Konon)

Throughout generations, teachers worldwide have cherished certain activities. Regrettably, both students and educators are growing accustomed to them. Some of these activities have become outdated, while others simply lack excitement. Meanwhile, modern pedagogy faces a new challenge, as numerous activities require modification for effective online implementation.

We will explore well-known activities that can be reimagined to enhance the effectiveness of your lessons.

Travelling worldwide without leaving your classroom (Katerina Stashevskaya)

Why stick to your coursebook while there’s a whole big world around you?
In my talk, I am going to show a number of tools that enable you to visit various places without leaving your classroom. And of course, I’ll share lots of practical activities that can be done on your virtual trips!

AI Challenges and Opportunities . (Nik Peachey )

With the emergence of freely available large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT in late 2022, we saw a paradigm shift in the potential of AI applications to support language learning and teaching. In this first session I will look at how AI has changed and the kinds of challenges and opportunities this presents for us as teachers and what we need to think about in order to face these challenges.

Breaking the Silence: 10 Ways to Empower Students to Express Themselves (Sarah Hillyard)

“Why are they are so silent when I want them to speak! But noisy the rest of the time?!” Are your learners lost for words? Do you need them to speak up in class? They might just need some confidence-boosters, some extra support or a comfortable environment to get speaking. In this session, we’ll explore 10 easy ways to create facilitative conditions for learners to overcome their fears and inhibitions, and feel empowered and confident communicating with each other in English.
