“The amazing power of self-selected reading”. (Stephen Krashen)
Pleasure reading, consisting largely of fiction, is a powerful and pleasant way of increasing language and literacy development. It also results in an impressive amount of knowledge: Those who read more, know more. Third, reading fiction can give us a better understanding of others (empathy).
Two conditions should be met if we are to take advantage of the power of pleasure reading: access to large numbers of interesting books (libraries) and encouraging self-selection.
“Designing successful speaking tasks” (Olga Connolly)
Speaking is a key skill that students need and want to develop when they study English. Communicative speaking tasks help them develop this skill in class (online or face-to-face) as they have a real conversational partner there. In the session we will be learning how to design speaking tasks that develop both oral fluency and accuracy. Together we will be designing a task as if we were writing a material for another teacher and her students. This will help us realise what aspects of task design are necessary to keep in mind in order to run a successful task later.
Why don’t learners learn what teachers teach? (Irina Grekova)
We are all familiar with a situation when after presenting and practicing the TL our students fail to use it while completing a communicative task. Why does it happen? In this session, we are going to look at a number of linguistic and extra- linguistic factors related for effective 2nd language acquisition and discuss some useful tips and suggestions on how to make teaching and learning more effective.
Making Use of Authentic Materials (Anna Kashcheeva)
In this 90-minute webinar, we’ll focus on the concept of authenticity and explore some ways of exploiting real-life texts. We’ll brush up and work out some principles of task design so that you can create your own materials based on authentic texts. By the end of the session, we’ll have created a list of practical ideas and discussed what contributes to successful language learning experience. I hope some of the activities you’ll want to use on Monday morning.
